Jim Tobias, trombone

Jim Tobias is currently serving as a long-term trombone substitute with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. A Philadelphia native, Jim has studied and performed across the United States, appearing with esteemed ensembles such as the Jacksonville, Houston, Kansas City, Fort Worth, and Richmond Symphonies. In the summer of 2025, he performed with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He has performed under the direction of renowned conductors including Cristian Măcelaru, Andris Nelsons, Alan Gilbert, David Zinman, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

An avid chamber musician, Jim is passionate about performing in brass quintets and other small ensembles. His dedication to collaboration and musical versatility continues to shape his artistic voice.

Jim has been a fellow at both the Tanglewood Music Center and the Music Academy of the West. He has also participated in an extended masterclass with Jörgen van Rijen and performed at the Punto Arte Festival in Volterra, Italy. Additional festival appearances include the Third Coast Trombone Retreat.

A recent fellow with the New World Symphony, Jim earned his Master’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, studying with Allen Barnhill. He completed his undergraduate studies at The Juilliard School under Joseph Alessi, and has also studied with Matthew Vaughn and Jerry Schauer.

Deeply committed to music education, Jim previously served as the Lower School Music and Choral Director at St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Delaware. He also maintains a vibrant private teaching studio, working with students of all levels.

Outside of music, Jim enjoys fishing, playing basketball, and spending time with his cat, Koi.
